Campaign advertising: Signs and Vehicles

Generic Political SignsDuring recent drives around Clarksville, I have been seeing short stretches of road with 20-30 campaign signs and often having two or more signs for a candidate on a single piece of property. I have a simple proposal to make.

Clarksville and Montgomery County should limit private property placement of these signs to one sign per political candidate per property. They may post signs for more than one candidate if they so choose. For signs placed on the public right of way, there should be no more than one sign for a individual candidate for every 500 feet of road.

The next issue we need to take a hard look at is these vehicles which are used as signs (pickup trucks with signs in the back, or vehicles painted to act as a campaign sign) which are often parked along the side of the road. These are a hazard for drivers trying to enter the flow of traffic along where they are placed. They create an obstruction which can block a drivers view of the oncoming traffic. As such they should either be banned or be required to be placed a certain minimum distance from the side of the road. I would suggest requiring them to be placed at least 20 feet from the side of the road even if they would be otherwise legally parked in a space.

What’s your opinion? We would like to hear from you on this topic!
