Voting Rights Act protects all Americans

No matter who you are, as an adult, you have a right to vote.

There has been a lot of talk about the Voting Rights Act of 1965 being due to expire in 2007 and how it would revoke African Americans’ right to vote. Well, this story, urban legend or whatever else you may want to call it, is not true. Not entirely true anyway. There are some sections of this act that were due to expire in 2007 that have been addressed by the U.S. Congress since 2005 in a proactive move to ensure the renewal of those sections of this act.

However, while many believe that this just affects the rights of African-Americans, nothing could be further from the truth. The Voting Rights Act of 1965 actually protects all of us from being subjected to unnecessary measures that could restrict or prevent our ability to vote as a whole. «Read the rest of this article»

Gay rights back in the news

So yes, it’s been a great day. Why on earth would I say such a thing? The Supreme Court in a largely liberal state has ruled against gay marriage. That’s supposed to be a bad thing. Isn’t it? Compound that with recent big losses in New York and right here in Tennessee and you have a huge blow to gay activism everywhere.

Well, maybe not. Consider this: with every loss to a state’s Supreme Court, the Reich-wing has one of their toys snatched away. As it turns out, those “activist judges” aren’t such activists after all. Grand Opening of the New Montgomery County Democratic Party Headquarters

The Montgomery County Democratic Party will be holding a formal grand opening celebration for their new party headquarters located at 120 Legion Street in downtown Clarksville. The ceremony will be held Friday July 28, 2006 at 5pm.

Dunbar Cave State Natural Area to unveil archaeological finds at new entrance gate dedication

Clarksville, TN,  State Environment and Conservation Commissioner Jim Fyke will visit Dunbar Cave State Park and Natural Area on July 29, 2006 at 10 a.m. CDT for a ceremony to help dedicate the new entrance gate at the cave.

The new gate was made possible through a cooperative effort with the Friends of Dunbar Cave and the State Department of Environment and Conservation, and will help protect the significant archaeological finds inside the cave, while also allowing the public access to see the sights firsthand.

High oil and gas prices, a sign of market manipulation?

$55,000 per minute or $7.27 billion. That what the profits for oil giant BP in their second quarter breaks down to. Profits for BP are up over 30% from last year, a record high for them in any single quarter.

In Kuwait, government financial assets have reached $166 billion, mostly due to the their record oil profits. So, they have issued plans to give each citizen of the country a gift, of approximately $690 US dollars each. Kuwait has had a surplus for each of the past seven fiscal years of more than 50 billion dollars a year.
