Vote no on 1 Tennessee Rally

On October 20, the Austin Peay State University Gay-Straight Alliance (G.S.A), an ardent bastion for Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, and Transgender rights, also known as G.L.B.T. rights, will host a Vote No on Amendment No. 1 Rally. A panel of guest speakers will address the crowd on the implications for the G.L.B.T. community and the community at large.
Guest speakers include Dr. Marisa Richmond of the Vote NO on 1 TN Campaign Headquarters, David Shelton, Clarksville Pride Chairperson, Michael Covington, Clarksville Pride Treasurer and James Butler. Dr. Richmond will be the keynote speaker for the event. A question and answer session will be held.

In addition, the G.S.A. plans to politically campaign for “Vote No” at the Montgomery County Election Commission in full accordance with all rules on Saturday, October 21 st from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m. and tentatively on Tuesday, November 7th from 10:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m.

Clarksville Resident Curt Davis had this to say on Amendment 1:
With any policy there will always be unintended consequences. Many people are unaware that this amendment will hurt many Tennessee families and that there will be negative repercussions for domestic partnership rights. Similar amendments that have recently passed in other states have been utilized to deny domestic partnership benefits to heterosexual couples as well.
Davis has had first hand experience with the denial of domestic partner rights in Tennessee in 2002, when his partner, David Shelton, was in an automobile accident. The Gateway Medical Center refused to let him see Shelton even after he was moved to a regular room due to the fact that he was not legally considered a family member. There are a multitude of rights at stake in the November 7th election. Regardless of whether the amendment passes or fails, G.L.B.T. Americans in Tennessee will not possess any more rights than they do now, but it will be the first occurrence in state history where discrimination will be written into the Tennessee State Constitution. Mother Teresa once said, “If you judge people you have no time to love them.” It is clear that the Tennessee Amendment No. 1 is an arrow, one that is on the brink of being released, for the sheer purpose of judgment, not sanctity of any kind.
