Why am I a Fool?

By Debbie Boen | February 12, 2007 | Print This Post

The foolLike the tarot card “fool” from Medieval times, being the fool is the first action before all others. One can not be the King or Queen without first being the fool. The fool is the first step to learning, taking on, and beginning something new. How does one feel when taking a first step? Foolish.

The tarot card shows the fool in bright colors taking a step over a cliff. A dog is a companion. The fool has a weird sort of faith and trust (like the dog) in the universe. What the fool doesn’t have, symbolic in the vitality of bright colors, is fear. While the fool learns and grows in taking risks, others point at and mock the fool while staying in their comfort zones of fear. Critics badger the fool, when inside they wish to be the King (be successful, have a following) but cannot bear to be the fool.

  • The fool in me gets me to raise my hand in a classroom, while the room bears down on me to be quiet, fit in, and pretend that I know what I don’t.
  • The fool in me is the part that wins out when I go to a new town, a new country.
  • Fools try new and different foods.
  • The fool lets me go where I’m not the majority in: language, culture, color.
  • The fool is the part of me that urges me to step over the comfort line. It urges me to use my voice when no one else does.
  • The fool in me picks up the paint brush or designs a 3D sculpture. No art, no imagination would exist without the fool.
  • The fool dares to dream and then make that dream a reality.
  • The fool gets on the stage.
  • The fool writes; every word chosen with integrity comes from the fool’s mouth.
  • The fool makes mistakes, the greatest learning tool there is.
  • THE FOOL DARES TO SPEAK AGAINST THE MOB MENTALITY.

It is the duty of all men & women of all colors to be individual leaders in their communities.

By Terry McMoore | February 6, 2007 | Print This Post

Terry McMooreWhile everyone is still waiting for the second coming of a Dr. King I prefer to believe that gone are the days of one single leader in our community. I like to believe that there are many leaders sprinkled throughout the Black community. It is the duty of all men & women of all colors to be individual leaders in their communities.

I have learned that the media giveth and the media taketh away. The above mentioned philosophy and quote was offered up to the media but I guess it did not make the editors’ final cut this time and I can live with that. I will also have to live with Mayor Piper as our leader for the next four years and again I can deal with that.

The Mayor is an excellent spin master he took a simple press release opposing the appointment of interim Deputy Police Chief Frankie Gray written by yours truly, and spun it to make the whole community believe I was a disgruntled Black leader. Touché Mr. Mayor, Touché. «Read the rest of this article»

Video: The Root of All Evil? by Richard Dawkins

By Bill Larson | February 6, 2007 | Print This Post

The Root of All Evil? by Richard DawkinsThe Root of All Evil? is a two-part documentary written and presented by Dr. Richard Dawkins, Professor of the Public Understanding of Science, Oxford University, and author of The Selfish Gene, The Blind Watchmaker, Climbing Mount Improbable, Unweaving the Rainbow, The Ancestor’s Tale, and The God Delusion.

The Root of All Evil?, by the Oxford University evolutionary biologist Richard Dawkins, is his controversial documentary that complements his bestselling book The God Delusion. Dawkins presents his view of religion as a cultural virus that, like a computer virus, once downloaded into the software of society corrupts many of the programs it encounters. It isn’t hard to find examples to fit this view; one has only to read the dailies coming out of the Middle East to see its nefarious effects.

This documentary is available on DVD for $29.95 [ Click here to order] or click read more to find out more and watch a preview of this video for free online «Read the rest of this article»

Singing Cowboy

By Bill Larson | February 4, 2007 | Print This Post

Break the habitThere are over 8.5 million Americans including my own mother who are living with tobacco-related illnesses. With this in mind “The Truth” saddled up a horse, found a cowboy with a hole in his neck as a result of smoking, and asked him to sing a little ditty…

Part of the “Truth” anti-smoking ads, a singin’ cowboy rides through the streets of NYC, mechanically intoning a cowpoke song through his tracheotomy voicebox.

Clarksville Mayor Tries to Block Key Black Leaders From Having Input in Selection of a New Police Chief

By Terry McMoore | February 1, 2007 | Print This Post

Terry McMooreFOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

In an email to Terry McMoore, a key leader in the Black community, Clarksville, TN Mayor Johnny Piper is attempting to delay meeting with him concerning the selection process that will be used to select and appoint a new Chief of Police.  After Mr. McMoore questioned the open door policy of past mayors, he was given a meeting date in late March by Mayor Piper.

Mr. McMoore’s reply to the Mayor was that a late March date was unacceptable and to far out for Community Members and all African American Leaders to have any real impact in the decision making process.  He went on to inform the Mayor that this process should not just include a hand full of hand picked African American & Community Leaders. «Read the rest of this article»
