Video: The fifth estate: The Lies That Led To War

By Bill Larson | March 24, 2007 | Print This Post

CBC News' The fifth estate

The Canadian Broadcasting Corporation’s program, The fifth estate took a look at the lies and manipulations which lead to the invasion of Iraq and the failure of the media to question the lies which they were being fed by this administration. They point out the many simularities between what we heard then about Iraq and what we are hearing from the administration about Iran. This program first aired on March 7th 2007.

Since the US-led invasion four years ago, the fifth estate has covered Iraq and the war on terror from virtually every angle–the military, media, intelligence, politics–revealing aspects of the story that you didn’t find anywhere else. Now, as the White House warns about the latest threat in the region, this time from Iran, it’s worthwhile looking back to examine the deception, suspect intelligence, even lies, that convinced the world of the rightness of targeting Saddam Hussein. «Read the rest of this article»

A message from Al Gore on Global Warming

By Debbie Boen | March 24, 2007 | Print This Post

Al GoreBy 10:00 AM yesterday, as I took my seat in the hearing room, an incredible 519,414 people had signed our message to Congress demanding immediate action to solve the climate crisis.

All of those boxes chock full of your messages, sitting right next to me as I testified, were a fantastic show of support and one that is already having an impact as our Representatives and Senators begin to debate solutions to the climate crisis. In fact, so many people signed our message in the 24 hours before the hearing, we are still working on printing them. But don’t worry, Congress now knows that you have spoken, and I will personally make sure every last message is delivered.

I also wanted to make sure that you had the chance to see the hearing for yourself, so I’ve posted video highlights on algore.com: «Read the rest of this article»

THE POUR HOUSE CAFE

By Larry Dunlap | March 23, 2007 | Print This Post

Larry DunlapI walked into The Pour House Cafe this morning and looked around for Leonard. I have been busy lately and haven’t seen him around. To tell the truth I have been hoping I wouldn’t run into him after our last time together when he showed me his song in progress about indoor toilets.

I strolled over to the round table in the corner and the usual crowd was there. Jelly, my big buddy, smiled and said, “Have a seat, Preacher, sit down and tell us something.”

I looked around the table and said my “how do’s ” to the two other fellows seated there.

“Well, Elvis, ” I said to the short, bald man directly in front of me.

“How’s your wife doing?” His wife had been sick with the flu.

Elvis was named Elvis about the time the other Elvis was in Jr. High. The name was all that they shared. He was short, bald and couldn’t carry a tune if it had handles on it. «Read the rest of this article»

What hurts our troops!

By Bill Larson | March 23, 2007 | Print This Post

Rep John Murtha (D-PA)The House debates the U.S. Troops Readiness, Veterans’ Health and Iraq Accountability Act. The House of Representatives has a choice: either endorse the President’s open-ended commitment to the war in Iraq or demand accountability, support our troops and set a timeline for the phased redeployment of our troops. It passed 218-212. Of course George W. Bush Jr. says he will veto the measure.

This is a portion of the debate from Rep. John Murtha  (D-PA)

This is a good example of why people who really support the troops are also peace activists. You don’t send our troops into harms way when they are not trained, equipped, and ready for combat. You don’t send them to war without an achievable plan for victory. You definitely don’t send them into combat without support systems in place for when they come home again. You don’t send them into battle while at the same time cutting the medical benefits that were promised to them and their families. «Read the rest of this article»

Regrets in Iraq

By Bill Larson | March 21, 2007 | Print This Post

George W. Bush Jr and his Mission Accomplished signKadhim al-Jubouri, the man who attacked the base of the massive statue of Saddam over four years ago, now speaks out against the invasion which removed the former Iraqi leader from power in the video clip which is below the fold, and the associated story

So this is what we have gained from: over 4 years of occupation; over $410,031,316,072 wasted; the loss of over 3223 US Soldier’s lives,  not to mention the neverending pain and loss felt by their loved ones; the 23,417 soldier’s who were wounded and/or maimed for life? All for a war which was intended to enrich the corporate bottom line for politically connected defense contractors like Dick Cheney’s Halliburton and KBR. Say no more to this lunacy and start bringing our troops home!

If you still support the war then it’s time for you to begin to use the brains God gave you, and think! Stop confusing your personal loyalty to a particular political party or politician, with patriotism or supporting the troops. They are not the same thing. «Read the rest of this article»

Peace activists gather at eternal flame

By Christine Anne Piesyk | March 20, 2007 | Print This Post

The Fourth anniversary of the iraq war peace vigilOpposing forces on the Iraq War issue gathered at the Pillar or Fire, Pillar of Clouds  in downtown Clarksville last night. The FreeThinkers for Peace and Civil Liberties held a peace vigil at 7 p.m. Monday acknowledging the end of the 4th year of the Iraq War,  calling for an end to the conflict and the safe return of our troops from what they deem is an unwinnable war. Jeff Mackens and a half dozen pro-war pro-Bush supporters also gathered, waving flags at passers-by. Ironically, both groups offered the same basic message: support our troops. Their differences rest in issues of policy, not people.

At the center of the peace group was a large, stark white sign reading Every Life Is Unique, illuminated by a floodlight and clusters of candles at its base. The group also clustered candles on the marble base of the eternal flame to illuminate it, since the flame itself is not lit. Using songs, drumming,  poetic readings and personal statement, the group spoke of their support for the troops and their opposition to U.S. policies and censured the official lies that launched the war. In a moment reminiscent of the Vietnam era, the  sang Give Peace A Chance. «Read the rest of this article»
