Manufacturing Consent: Noam Chomsky and the Media

By Bill Larson | June 3, 2007 | Print This Post

Manufacturing Consent: Noam Chomsky and the MediaFunny, provocative and surprisingly accessible, “Manufacturing Consent: Noam Chomsky and the Media” explores the political life and ideas of Noam Chomsky, world-renowned linguist, intellectual and political activist. In a dynamic collage of new and original footage, biography, archival gems, imaginative graphics and outrageous illustrations, the film highlights Chomsky’s probing analysis of mass media. A mammoth two-part project, MANUFACTURING CONSENT is nonetheless light on its feet, favoring a style that encourages viewers to question its own workings, as Chomsky himself encourages his listeners to extricate themselves from the “web of deceit” by undertaking a course of “intellectual self-defense.” Appearing in the film are major journalists and critics, including Bill Moyers, William F. Buckley, Jr., Tom Wolfe, Peter Jennings, Jeff Greenfield, philosopher Michel Foucault, White House reporter Sarah McClendon, New York Times editorial writer Karl E. Meyer and revisionist author Robert Faurisson.

Manufacturing Consent features appearances by journalists Bill Moyers and Peter Jennings, pundit William F. Buckley Jr., novelist Tom Wolfe and philosopher Michel Foucault.

By Bill Larson | June 3, 2007 | Print This Post

One in three women worldwide will be beaten, raped, coerced into sex or otherwise abused in her lifetime. Every two and a half minutes, somewhere in America, someone is sexually assaulted. Every 15 seconds a woman is physically assaulted by an intimate partner.

Image depicting Lizzette Ochoa. Taken by Lizzette’s aunt Astrid Amador who took pictures of her niece at the hospital after her husband hit her. She released pictures to the public to create awareness.Throughout the world, women face violence every day. From the battlefield to the bedroom, women are at risk from violence in all areas of life. Violence against women is an abuse that is not confined to any political or economic system. It is prevalent in every society in the world. It cuts across boundaries of wealth, race and culture. It affects the young and the old. Wherever we live, women are suffering violence.

Violence against women persists because society allows it to. Virtually every culture in the world contains forms of violence against women that are often invisible because they are seen as normal or acceptable.

The African American community mourns the recent death of Yolanda King.

2007_05_16_yolanda1.jpgWith great sadness we mourn the lost of Yolanda King. Civil Rights Activist, Producer, Actress, and Lecturer. As we reflect on her achievements while on this earth let’s not forget that this Homegoing will unite her with God, Mother and Father.

She will be missed by many but her advocacy for the poor will be remembered forever as will her spirit for life and equity for all.  As an avid supporter of Gay rights, Yolanda King was not always placed in the forefront of the media like other King family members for their stance on this issue.
