Gang Awareness Task Force to launch S.E.C.U.R.E. website

The Clarksville Community Gang Awareness Task Force will launching S.E.C.U.R.E., their new Safe & Effective Community Using Resources for Empowerment gang awareness and educational website, at a community open house event on Tuesday, October 9, 2007 at Xtreme Ministries Church, 1596 Fort Campbell Boulevard, Clarksville, (behind Hardees Restaurant, next to Food Lion) at 7:00 p.m.

The task force is a community-based organization consisting of parents, neighbors, youth, elected officials, faith leaders, law enforcement and educators. Their mission and purpose is to educate the community-at-large about gang violence that is occurring, and offer information on the signs and indicators of gang activity. The Task Force is chaired by Pastor Tommy Vallejos, with media coordination by Terry McMoore.

The website will offer parents information how young people are inducted into gangs, examples and explanations of the language, hand signals and other behaviors that are indicative of gang affiliation or behavior, information on what young people must do to be initiated into a gang, signs of drug use, and a tip line (anonymous or not, your choice) for suspected gangs and gang activity.

A number of sections of the site are still being completed, but what is up is already a wealth of imformation for parent, educators and the community at large.

Creation of the task force website is a response to the increasing amount of gang activity and gang-related violence occurring in the greater Clarksville community. The Task Force also hopes to enlighten and encourage parents and all residents on solutions to stop the violence and obtain prevention measures to stop the initial gang involvement of our youth. In cooperation with local leaders, government and law enforcement, the task force will be able to enhance our community’s knowledge of gangs and gang prevention.

We encourage you, the public, to attend this event, which will include refreshments, social time and a question and answer session. The address for S.E.C.U.R.E., which still has some sections in development, will be launched on Oct. 9 at  http://www.clarksvillesecure.com
