VITA: Income tax filing help available for low income families

By Christine Anne Piesyk | January 2, 2008 | Print This Post

co-tax-form-pic1.jpgJames E. Kendrick, Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) Program Coordinator in Clarksville has announced the January 31 opening of that program. VITA is a volunteer based, free tax preparation service for lower income families.

In addition to the free tax preparation service, VITA emphasizes the importance of asset building and finance management to its clients. They are also launching an initiative to urge more families to file for the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) with the hope that those families will use this money to build more assets.

On January 31st, 2008, VITA will be participating in the National EITC Awareness Day, which will also act as the Kickoff for our VITA program for 2008. The Kickoff will introduce the VITA program to members of the community, link community members to asset building and finance management resources, and demonstrate some of the actual services we will provide through the VITA program.

If you have any questions, need more information, or would like to confirm your participation please feel free to reach me through email (vista@unitedwayofclarksville.org), phone (931-674-4291 or 931-241-9356), or mail United Way of Greater Clarksville Region 1300 Madison Street, 37040.

How did that happen?) as a journalist, feature writer, investigative reporter, editor, and film/theater/arts critic, I brought my liberal New England activism to Tennessee several years ago. having completed a midlife undergraduate degree in community organizing and women's studies, and an MA in Interdisciplinary Arts. I am a community volunteer and a member of FreeThinkers for Peace and Civil Liberties. I am a certified storm spotter. In my spare time (define spare time please?) I am a voracious reader, obsessive movie buff, classical music junkie; I also and design and make sci-fi/fantasy and renaissance costumes. I have an unquenchable interest in just about everything. I see life as an ongoing opportunity for learning and adventure, with the best things still to come.
