The recent City Council decision to cut the pay of the City Judge by 60% [from $25,000 to $12,000] is the height of ludicrous. The time spent physically "on the bench" is only part of the judicial responsibility attendent to that position, the visible top layer of time on a job that requires invisible hours spent reviewing case work and paperwork, reviewing issues of law [as per Judge Smith's letter]. If the city expects to find any Doctor of Law willing to launch a campaign and run for this office at this reduced rate of pay it will be by luck or desperation. Clarksville will get what it pays for, and when it comes to its judiciary, $12,000 a year won't buy much.
