Natural gas pipe replacement underway

Clarksville Gas and Water (CGW) has scheduled work to begin on July 15, 2008 to replace approximately 1,800 ft. of aged natural gas pipe in the downtown area. The existing 6 inch steel pipe will be replaced with 6 inch, polyethylene (plastic) pipe beginning at Second Street approximately 175 feet south of Commerce Street and then along Madison and Hiter Streets, Cobb Alley, Fifth Street and ending on Commerce Street approximately 300 ft. west of University Avenue.

Through routine leak surveys, this area of pipe has been identified with high volumes of gas leaks and must be completely replaced. The plastic pipe is more resistant to corrosion than steel and will endure many more years of service.

CGW sent Request for Proposals (RFP) out in May and the 60-day contract was awarded on June 11, 2008 to the lowest bidder, Team Construction, of Nashville, Tennessee. Team Construction plans to work diligently to complete the project in half the time allowed lessening any inconvenience to area residents during the construction period. Notification letters will be mailed to all residents and businesses informing them of the project. Work will not be performed on Wednesdays or Sundays to avoid interference with church services.

Trenching will be part of the pipe installation, but road closures will be avoided with intermittent lane closure. The work will only leave eleven natural gas customers temporarily out of service at the end of the project when workers will introduce natural gas into the new line. Customers must be at home to have their household service restored; however, CGW personnel will be available 24 hours a day to restore individual services and to relight pilots. Affected customers who are not at home during the restoration should call 931-645-7400 during normal business hours or after 4:30 p.m. at 931-645-0116 to have service restored to their homes. Questions about the project can be directed to Team Construction Foreman, Doug Campbell, at 615-207-7462.
