Austin Peay State University has established a scholarship for Trigg County, Ky., residents after receiving a gift of $25,000 from APSU alumnus James D. Howell.  In honor of the donor, the scholarship will be named the James D. Howell Scholarship.

Howell said he is the product of a one-room schoolhouse and grew up during a time when college was a privilege only a select few could afford. After graduating high school, he enlisted in the U.S. Coast Guard and took advantage of the G.I. Bill to attend APSU.

Since graduating from APSU in 1961, Howell has worked in public education, the Department of Atomic Energy and as an entrepreneur began a variety of industry-related business.

Howell is very passionate about higher education and demonstrates his enthusiasm for his alma mater through continued support and involvement with APSU. When asked why he chose to give this endowment to the University, Howell responded, “Austin Peay opened every door I approached and has helped me to achieve a great deal of success in life. Now I want to give something back to the school for the role it played in my life.”

In order to be eligible for the James D. Howell Scholarship, applicants must have a financial need, be residents of Trigg County—or graduates of Trigg County High School—and maintain full-time enrollment status at APSU.
