I have to say I completely agree. I only just saw the 1951 version the night before and was not impressed by this version. It reminded me more of the knock off film "The Day The Earth Stopped". I had expected certain things to be updated to fit this new age, but it failed. I really had higher hopes for this film and am sad to say I was very disappointed.

The people of earth have been warned: skip this movie!

Having been a lifelong fan of the original, and with a history of disappointment in remakes of classic films, I went to see DTESS hoping for, well, more that what I got. I was also hoping to to do a "he said she said" review with David, but that only works if you disagree about key points in a film.

Jaden Smith was, in fact, quite good given the uneven characterization in this script: good kid? bratty kid? He shapeshifts too quickly.

All I can say is "what were they (filmmakers) thinking?" Oh, wait a minute. They weren't thinking...
