DAC hosts “Les Fauvres Clarksville”

The Downtown Artists Cooperative will host a  group show, “Les Fauves Clarksville”,  which will hang in the DAC Gallery, 96 Franklin Street, Historic Downtown Clarksville,  from January 8th-31st.

An opening  reception will be held Thursday  night, January 8th, from  5:00-7:00 p.m.

The fifteen artists showing are: Terri Jordan, Tammy Dohner, Malcolm
Glass, Mitzi Cross, Peggy Bonnington, Gail Meyer, Heidi Hopkins,
Connie Livingston-Dunn, Winnie Bagley, Lynn Stanley, Kathleen Chute,
Martha Yanchyshyn, Eunice Kern,   Betty Liles, and Nada Fuqua.

If you can’t make the opening reception, please stop by some other time during the month of January.  Gallery hours are noon to 6:00 p.m. Wednesday through Saturday.

Constitutional Officers: The Treasurer

This is the second in a three part series discussing the upcoming election of the State of Tennessee Constitutional Officers. The final segment will appear Wednesday, January 7.

This year the Republican gained control of the Tennessee House and Senate: the first time in 140 years.Therefore, they have the numbers to replace the current Constitutional Officers (all appointed by Democrats).

In Part 1 on this series, I discussed the Constitutional Officer of the Comptroller. In this article I will discuss the position of Treasurer, including a description of the Treasurer’s job duties and information on each potential candidate, including the current treasurer, the Honorable Dale Sims.
First, what does the Treasurer do?

Per the Treasurer’s website, the Treasurer is responsible for the following:

• Receiving and disbursing public funds.
• Managing all State investments, including the pension fund (at June 30, 2007 the value of the pension plans was over $32 billion dollars with over 322,000 participants).
• Administering three major employee benefit programs, including the Tennessee Consolidated Retirement System, the Deferred Compensation Program, and the Flexible Benefits Plan.
• Operating the Unclaimed Property, College Savings (Section 529 Plans), and Small and Minority-Owned Business programs.
• Overseeing the risk management program and handling and adjudicating all claims made against the State.

County trustee’s schedule “satellite” tax payment offices

Brenda Radford, Montgomery County Trustee, has announced  SmartTrips and the following information on tax relief/tax feeze.

The Montgomery County Trustee’s Office is coming to a Volunteer Fire Department near you.  With ever-rising fuel and grocery prices, everyone is looking for a little help.  On the following days the locations listed below will serve as an optional, satellite Trustee’s Office and offer county residents the convenience of paying their County Property taxes or to apply for any of the (5) Tax Relief/Tax Freeze Programs in their respective areas of Montgomery County:

• Friday, Jan. 9, 2009  East Montgomery Station, 9:00 a.m.-3:00 p.m.
• Friday, Jan. 16, 2009  St. Bethlehem  Station,  9:00 a.m.-3:00 p.m.

Israeli Independence War hero pardoned by President Bush

1948 ‘Gunrunner’ for Israel pardoned posthumously by Bush.

Among the twenty presidential pardons announced on Dec. 22nd, was one of significant distinction. In 1949, an American citizen, a Irish Protestant, defied the U.S. Neutrality Act and took actions which directly aided the emerging Jewish state of Israel in its war of independence.

President Bush has pardoned a man who broke the law by providing planes and weapons to Jews fighting for the fledgling state of Israel in its 1948 War of Independence. «Read the rest of this article»
