Clarksville Intersection improvement project set to begin

tdot-logo-lgNashville – The Tennessee Department of Transportation will begin making major improvements to a busy Clarksville intersection early next month. The work will be taking place at the intersections of Riverside Drive/Kraft Street (US 41A) and North 2nd/New Providence Boulevard (SR 12 at SR 13), and will include the removal of the existing riding surface, installation of new asphalt, curb, gutter, sidewalks, and storm drain system. The intersection will also be widened to include additional turn lanes and crosswalks.

Lane closures and traffic shifts will begin within the next two weeks and will remain in place until the project is completed in November 2009. Temporary closures of Riverside Drive and Kraft Street will also be necessary during construction. Portable message signs will be installed at several locations in Clarksville to alert motorists of the construction. Drivers are urged to seek an alternate route around this work zone.

  1. Let me tell you a little story. A police department source told me that the city was going to be unable to place red-light cameras at the intersection of Riverside Drive due to the concrete roadway. This was the intersection that they were literally drooling over the potential revenue they were likely to gain.

Shortly there after plans were announced to redo the intersection. The city’s position is that it’s not due to red-light cameras, but instead is due to the increased truck traffic they are expecting due to HSC construction. As a private citizen I do not buy that for a second.

The proof will be in the pudding as they say. If after this reconstruction this intersection is suddenly a new red-light camera intersection, my story is verified. If cameras do not appear at this intersection then my story is not. Which one do you bet will happen…

  2. Hey Bill, while I’m totally on board with you regarding the misuse of red light cameras, that does not change the fact that Riverside/New Providence intersection is one of the worst in Clarksville.

That intersection is often very congested, it is in desparate need of repair, it is poorly designed, it’s dangerous to cross and to top it all off, it stinks. The only good thing I can think of with that intersection are the Jesus ladies that stand over at the McDonalds corner in the morning.
