Quarterback Ryan Perrilloux, the former Louisiana State quarterback who passed for 210 yards, broke the game open late in the third quarter with his legs, running 15 yards for the score. That was only after he hooked up with Greg Smith on a 47-yard pass to set up what proved to be the game-clinching score.

JSU sealed the win when A.J. Davis intercepted a Jake Ryan pass and returned it 55 yards to give the Gamecocks an insurmountable 18-point advantage.

For the game, Jacksonville State outgained Austin Peay, 398 to 129. APSU’s OVC-leading rushing team was held to 106 yards on 41 carries, putting the pressure on APSU’s passing game that ended up just 3-of-23 passing for just 23 yards.

In the first half, Jacksonville State dominated the game statistically but the Govs managed to stay in it, taking advantage of Gamecock penalties and a blocked punt.

After APSU gained one yard on its opening drive, the Jacksonville State took over at its 31 yard line and proceeded to march 69 yards balancing Ryan Perrilloux passes with slicing runs. With second and eight at the APSU nine, Jamal Young took a pitch running right and cut back, going untouched for the score.

Early in the second quarter, the Governors, who had just seven total first-quarter yards, finally generated some offense, starting from its own 30 yard line and moving to deep in JSU territory, utilizing a Gamecock personal foul penalty to get them out of their own territory. APSU stalled at the JSU 15, settling for Stephen Stansell 32-yard field goal.

On the ensuing possession, the Governors forced JSU to punt, Rickey Thomas blocked Patrick Tatum’s boot at the JSU 34. Freshmen Jeremy Ross picked it up and took it for the touchdown to give APSU a 10-7 lead.
But that advantage didn’t last long. On the ensuing kickoff the Govs were called for a personal foul penalty, allowing JSU to start the drive at the Govs’ 46.Four plays later the JSU had regained the lead as Perrilloux hooked up with Calvin Middleton on the right side. He zigzagged his way all the way to the Governors end zone, a 34-yard play.

That was how the first half ended as the Gamecocks held a 236 to 61 advantage in total offense.
