Jimmy Dunn to be inducted into Red Coat Society

APSU Governors LogoThe Governors Club, Austin Peay State University’s athletic booster club, has announced this year’s class of the Red Coat Society, a Hall of Fame for service to APSU athletics.

In fact, this year’s class will be one person: Jimmy Dunn, a longtime insurance agent who owns Jimmy Dunn Insurance and who has been supporting APSU athletics since the early 1960s. He will be honored at halftime of APSU’s 1 p.m., Ohio Valley Conference men’s game with Tennessee State, Saturday. A reception also will take place 11:30 a.m. that day in the second level Governors Club Room. He will be honored with a red coat.

To be eligible for the Red Coat Society, individuals must be: a member in good standing of the Governors Club for at least five years; have supported the athletic programs at Austin Peay through financial contributions or participation in Governors Club fund-raisers and other events; have supported more than one sport both at home and away whenever possible and recognized within the APSU community for their association with Austin Peay athletics.

Dunn has been a member of the Governors Club since its inception in the early 1960s and played a major role in organizing bus trips to away games to such rivals as Murray State, Middle Tennessee and Tennessee Tech. He also was heavily involved in athletics fundraising for much of his professional life. He also organized the first APSU alumni-staff golf tournament in 1978.

Dunn also played an instrumental role in organizing the first Governors Golf Classic—it was known as Goober Golf in 1987 when it started with George “Goober” Lindsey serving as the celebrity host—at Cole Park and he continued to chair the tourney when it moved to Eastland Green (1991-95).

For the past seven years, he has chaired the Clarksville Civitan/APSU Scholarship Tournament. More than $48,000 has been awarded during the scholarship program’s 12 years.

This is the seventh year for the society. The initial class of inductees in 2004 was: Brandon Buhler, the late Perkins Freeman, Richard Hardwick and H.R. Wortham. In 2005, Edmund Terrell, Davis McCutchen, Don Corlew and Bobby Mills were inducted followed by Carolyn Yarbrough, Lawrence Baggett, Zoot Parker and Evans Harvill in 2006. Billy Atkins, Gaines Hunt, Bill Roberts and Sherry Hoppe were inducted in 2007 while Dwight Dickson, Len Rye and Paula Hallett were admitted in 2008. Last year’s class was Mike O’Malley, Jerry Nass and Mike Schrecker.
