First Thursday Art Walk

You’re invited to join the merchants of Historic Downtown Clarksville for The monthly Art Walk, on April 1st from 5:00 pm – 8:00 pm Kendall Welsh from ARTifacts sent us this information about April’s artistic extravaganza.

Four diverse young artists will bringing their work to the Austin Peay Downtown Gallery in April for a month-long group exhibit. The show, which will feature APSU art alumni Janelle Costello, Caroline Tuzeneu, Sam Matthews and William Arnett Gentry, opens with a reception from 5 to 8 p.m. on April 1, and it will run through May 1.

The show will feature startlingly original work, such as Costello’s diorama-like photography collages that depict surreal scenes of imagined narratives.

“The intent of this body of work is to invite the viewer to temporarily escape the mundane by accentuating the beauty of make-believe,” she said.

Tuzeneu will exhibit her pottery, which represents her efforts to marry form and functionality.

“Balance is a huge part of making pottery,” she said. “I am constantly working toward achieving visual and physical balance in my pieces. Every time I sit down at the wheel, I keep this goal in the back of my mind.”

Matthews, who works in sculpture, will present works that explore his fascination in how various forms are viewed and interpreted.

“I see my work as a study of the viewer and how they react to various visual cues,” he said.

Gentry, a painter, plans to exhibit works that comment on the society’s over-consumption habits. He said he “tries to bring notice to the awful cycle that is perpetuated by producers and consumers in our economically driven culture.”

ARTifacts

Erin Slauson and Jo Rhoads are two vendors being featured at ARTifacts Emporium on Strawberry Alley.  In May Erin Slauson will be graduating with her BFA in studio arts from Austin Peay.  Although her concentration is ceramics, she also loves photography, painting and jewelry making.  Erin has a passion for creating functional bowls of all sizes, “I find myself making bowls more than any other form, they seem to calm my soul.”  You will also find a selection of sculptural bowls in Raku style as well as high fire glazes.  She aims to continue growing and developing her forms and sculptures, as for right now she is simply enjoying working hard and creating art.  Erin says, “Ceramics is alot about process, it has multiple steps, so being patient is key.  Luckily I love the process and am quite patient.”  Also on display this month will be a selection of her recent oil paintings.

When asked about her antique collection Jo Rhoads says, “Antiques are the root to our past. As a young girl, I was fascinated by the beautiful old furniture and the dishes of the “Greatest Generation”. Now I try to share the glimpse of the past with the young women of today by collecting a “spattering” of history in the form of my displays at ARTIfacts. I have a myriad of items to offer, from pieces of furniture, glassware, and vintage jewelry. My motto is: If you cannot find what your looking for, take my card and tell me, I will find it for you.”

The Framemaker

Drawings by artist Brad Reagan will be on exhibit at The Framemaker. Join us for the opening reception on Thursday, April 1 from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. The opening is part of Clarksville’s “First Thursday” art walk. Ingredients

Ingredients will feature Nicole Huff & Holly Weidman.  Nicole is a U.S. Army Veteran, mother of four, wife and student.

She started cake decorating as a hobby about 13 years ago and always gives honor to God for providing this opportunity.  Nicole’s mother had a friend named Margo who had a cake business and decided to retire; but instead of selling all her equipment she GAVE it to her. At the time, she wasn’t sure what she was going to do with all that stuff. But over time and a lot of practice, along with TONS of reading, Nicole learned more than she could of imagined.

Nicole absolutely loves cake decorating and her favorite part is seeing the look of enjoyment when she completes a cake or cupcake order for her customers. It is a true blessing to be able to put a smile on someone’s face.

Ingredients will be introducing Holly Weidman to the ArtWalk patrons and to Clarksville.

Photography has had a special attraction to Holly Weidman since she was 12. Digital hadn’t hit the market yet so each roll of film took “ages” to return. Holly loved flipping through the rolls of 24 or 36 pictures to see how they had turned out. Holly continued her love for learning with the New York Institute of Photography. People, faces and emotions are what Holly loves to capture so it was natural to find her shooting friends weddings, senior pictures or family events. In 2007 Holly began the journey into digital and has really loved the challenge and the new learning curve it has brought her way. Holly has lived in New York, Florida and now Tennessee and each area has its own God given beauty. Many of her pictures capture the unique design of each area. You can view Holly’s work at www.hollyannphoto.com.

Rogate’s Boutique will feature Gwendolyn Rodriguez. Gwendolyn is a local artist with a passion for portraying the moment.  her diverse interests are evident in the many themes she paints such as flowers, portraits, still life, and landscapes.  After studying abroad and a year at the Columbus College of Art and Design, she can to Clarksville in 1987, continuing her pursuit of art at Austin Peay. Campbell schools before homeschooling and continuing to teach art privately.  Her artwork can be found in private and public collections around the world.  Her most recent awards include “Best of Show” in the 2010 Customs House Museum Biennial Art Show and “Best of Show” at the Tennessee Art League Members Juried Show this month.
