Diversity is Golden at APSU during Disability Awareness Month

Walking to class, listening to a lecture, reading a sentence accurately or typing e-mail are daily actions most people can do without thinking twice.

But for those who have disabilities, such activities can be a challenge. Their world is different.

That’s what the Office of Disability Services at Austin Peay State University wants people to understand. April is Disability Awareness Month, and activities are designed so that the public can see how different life with a disability is.

The month began with a kick-off yesterday in the Morgan University Center when APSU President Tim Hall unveiled the theme for 2010 “Diversity is Golden”.

The STAR Center Access Express is from 10 a.m.-2 p.m., April 21 in the MUC Plaza. The mobile unit provides computer access evaluation, workplace accommodations, employer orientations and assistive technology evaluations to those in need of the services but who are unable to access them.

Refreshments will be served, and free T-shirts will be available to students who complete a tour of the mobile unit and complete an evaluation form. Students must have a valid APSU I.D.

For more information about the activities planned during Disability Awareness Month, contact APSU’s Office of Disability Services by telephone at (931) 221-6230. The text telephone number, or TTY, is (931) 221-6278.
