Baseball: Govs rally twice to down Bisons in extra innings

APSU Governors LogoAustin Peay State University’s baseball team needed extra innings but completed a come-from-behind 8-7 victory against Lipscomb, Tuesday night, in non-conference action at Dugan Field.

Austin Peay (25-25) scored five runs in the eighth inning to erase a 5-2 deficit. Outfielder Adam Browett’s leadoff home run began the eighth frame. Lipscomb reliever Alex Ross was able to retire the next two batters, but could not close out the inning. The next three Governors reached base before second baseman Chris Lewellyn’s bases-loaded walk. Outfielder Jared DeLong cleared the bases with his double, giving APSU a 7-5 advantage.

Lipscomb (18-34) rallied with runs in the eighth and ninth to tie the game and force extra-innings. The Bisons ninth-inning run came without a base hit as Govs reliever Zach Gerler walked three batters and hit another two to force in the game-tying run.

The Govs returned the favor in the 10th, as centerfielder Michael Blanchard was hit by a pitch with one out, stole second base and scored on DeLong’s single. Senior Matt Kole pitched a scoreless 10th inning to pick up his season’s first save.

Gerler (3-3) picked up the victory after allowing one run and striking out three over 1.1 innings. Starter Lucas Anderson allowed four runs over 4.2 innings.

Lipscomb’s Josh Cotham (1-4) was saddled for the loss after allowing one run and striking out three over 2.1 innings. Starter Matt Bowling allowed two runs on six hits over five innings.

DeLong led the Govs offense with a 3-for-6, four RBI effort. Kole and left fielder Cody Hudson also had two hits each.

Lipscomb catcher Brett Teschner was 3-for-4 with two RBI, his solo home runs in the fourth and sixth innings helping the Bisons jump out to that early 5-2 advantage. Right fielder Ricky Coleman was 4-for-4 with two RBI including a solo home run in the fourth that followed Teschner’s blast.

Austin Peay closes out its 2010 schedule with a three-game Ohio Valley Conference series against UT Martin, beginning with a 4:00 pm, Friday doubleheader at Raymond C. Hand Park.
