Sounds Blanked by Redbirds in Series Opener

Solid Chase Wright Effort Overshadowed By Four-Hit Memphis Shutout

Nashville SoundsMemphis, TN – Four Memphis pitchers combined on a four-hit shutout of the Nashville Sounds in the Redbirds’ 3-0 victory on Thursday evening at AutoZone Park in the opener of a five-game series.

Memphis pitchers retired 18 of the final 19 Nashville batters in the contest, including the last 10 in a row.

Nashville’s final hit of the night came when Joe Koshansky led off the fourth inning with a double. After that hit, Koshansky was the lone Sounds player to reach base the rest of the way when he was hit by a pitch in the sixth.

The shutout defeat was the sixth suffered by Nashville (45-41), which dropped its third straight road contest.

Right-hander Chuckie Fick (2-0) made a spot start for Memphis and hurled five scoreless innings, allowing four hits and striking out five Nashville batters to earn the victory.

The Memphis bullpen closed out the game with four hitless innings. Rich Rundles followed Fick with a scoreless frame, Josh Kinney put up two goose eggs, and Fernando Salas notched his 15th save of the year by retiring the Sounds in order in the ninth.

The four Redbirds hurlers combined to strike out 11 Nashville batters. The Sounds had a few chances to score early in the contest but finished 0-for-6 with runners in scoring position.

Overshadowed by the collective Memphis shutout was another outstanding performance by Nashville left-hander Chase Wright, who took a hard-luck loss for the visitors.

Wright (6-5) continued his recent dominance on the hill, allowing one run on four hits over his six frames of action. It marked the seventh time his last 11 trips to the hill that he held the opposition to one earned run or less. The effort was the southpaw’s seventh quality start of the season.

The teams combined for just eight total hits on the evening. No player on either club registered a multiple-hit effort in the contest.

Memphis plated the contest’s first run in the bottom of the fifth inning. Mark Shorey led off with a single against Wright and scored later in the frame on a James Rapoport sacrifice fly.

The Redbirds increased the lead against ineffective Sounds reliever Jeff Bennett in the seventh. The right-hander threw just one strike among his 19 pitches in the frame, walking four batters. The last free pass, to Rapoport, pushed home Donovan Solano.

David Johnson inherited a bases-loaded, one-out jam and allowed one additional run to score on a Ruben Gotay fielder’s choice groundout, increasing the Memphis lead to 3-0.

Sounds outfielder Brendan Katin extended his longest streak of the year to seven games with a first-inning single.

The teams continue the series with a 6:05pm doubleheader on Friday that will make up a May 17th rainout. Right-hander Marty McLeary (2-6, 10.38) will start the opener for the Sounds to face Memphis right-hander Lance Lynn (6-6, 5.42). Right-hander Tim Dillard (1-4, 4.99) will make his second start of the year for Nashville in the nightcap against a yet-to-be-announced Redbirds hurler.
