With ministry calling, Herring to forgo senior season

Austin Peay State University GovernorsAnswering to a higher calling, Austin Peay State University basketball guard/forward Ashley Herring has elected to forgo her senior season for religious reasons.

Herring, who recently began ministry training, has informed Lady Govs head coach Carrie Daniels and her teammates she is giving up her college basketball career.

“Ashley has gone through a spiritual transformation in the past year,” Daniels said. “Back in the spring, she talked to me about her desire of developing a closer relationship with God and she began taking ministry training classes.

“I know she struggled trying to involve both religion and athletics in her life. This decision (leaving the Lady Govs program) has weighed heavily on her mind. While disappointed she will not be part of this team next year, I know her teammates, as well as our coaching staff, certainly understand and respect her decision.”

Herring was APSU’s leading scorer in 2009-10, averaging 15 points to go with 5.4 rebounds and 2.4 assists per game for the 15-18 Lady Govs. She earned first-team All-Ohio Valley Conference and was named OVC tournament most valuable player as the Lady Govs won the OVC tournament championship and qualified for NCAA tourney play for a second straight season. The Memphis native (Bartlett HS) leaves the program with 1182 career points.

“Ashley certainly has left her mark on this program and the OVC and we appreciate everything she has done,” Daniels said. “In saying that, we also have an experienced and talented group of players coming back. I am confident we have players who will step to the forefront as we continue to elevate this program.”

Austin Peay will return three starters in 2010-11—junior forward Jasmine Rayner (10.5 ppg, 7.3 rpg), junior guard Whitney Hanley (8.8 ppg) and senior guard Brooke Faulkner (6.1 ppg). In addition, sophomore forward Meghan Bussabarger (4.6 ppg), the team’s top player of the bench, also returns.
