Fort Campbell, KY – Two 101st Airborne Division Soldiers died July 15th when their dismounted patrol encountered an improvised explosive device in Kandahar province, Afghanistan.
Killed were Sergeant First Class John H. Jarrell and Staff Sergeant Leston M. Winters.
John H. Jarrell
Sergeant First Class John H. Jarrell, 32, of Brunson, SC, was an infantryman assigned to Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 1st Battalion, 502nd Infantry Regiment, 2nd Brigade Combat Team. He entered the Army in June 1996 and arrived at Fort Campbell in February 2010.
Jarrell’s awards and decorations include: Bronze Star Medal with Valor device; Bronze Star Medal; Meritorious Service Medal; Army Commendation Medal; Army Achievement Medal; Meritorious Unit Commendation; Army Good Conduct Medal; National Defense Service Medal; Korean Defense Service Medal, Afghanistan Campaign Medal; Iraq Campaign Medal; Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal; Global War on Terrorism Service Medal; Noncommissioned Officers Professional Development Ribbon; Army Service Ribbon; Overseas Service Ribbon; Combat Infantry Badge; Parachute Badge; Air Assault Badge; Driver’s Mechanic Badge – with Driver – Tracked Vehicles; and Weapons Qualification: M4, expert.
Jarrell is survived by his wife, Wendi A., and daughter, Emma K., of Clarksville, TN; son, Brantley A., of Alvin, Texas; and parents, Bobby and Maude Duff of Estill, SC.
Leston M. Winters
Staff Sergeant Leston M. Winters, of Sour Lake, Texas, was a civil affairs medical sergeant assigned to Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 1st Battalion, 502nd Infantry Regiment, 2nd Brigade Combat Team. He entered the Army in July 1998 and arrived at Fort Campbell in April 2010.
Winters’ awards and decorations include: Army Commendation Medal; Army Good Conduct Medal; National Defense Service Medal; Afghanistan Campaign Medal; Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal; Global War on Terrorism Service Medal; Army Service Ribbon; Overseas Service Ribbon; and Weapons Qualification: M4, expert.
Winters is survived by his wife, Elizabeth J., son, Remington J., and daughter Emma B., all of Palmyra, TN; son, Jonathon T., who resides in Leipieg, Germany; and parents Kenneth and Cheryl Spivey of Sour Lake, Texas.
A memorial ceremony for both Soldiers will be held in Afghanistan.
