CLARKSVILLE, Tenn.-Austin Peay State University’s football team was sluggish in its second and final preseason scrimmage, Saturday morning.
Only two touchdowns were scored on the day and both came late. In fact, freshman cornerback Tyreon Clark made a leaping one-handed grab of a Trent Caffee errant pass, yanked it down and then dodged and darted his way to the end zone.
Then on the scrimmage’s final play, 5-3 freshman running back Ean Pemberton swept around left end and raced 18 yards for the score.
Penalties were the Govs’ biggest culprit. APSU head coach Rick Christophel stopped the scrimmage half way through to address his team’s lack of concentration, unforced penalties being his great focus. Dropped passes also were an issue.
Offensively, on the day sophomore quarterback Jake Ryan finished 7 of 12 passing for 103 yards, including a 33-yard toss to junior receiver Scott Thomas and a 21 yarder to T.C. Jennings.
Trent Caffee, who saw a multitude of drops during his repetitions, ended 4 of 12 for 62 yards, including a 23-yard toss to Robert Lemon, who led all receivers on the day with three catches for 40 yards. .
Rushing-wise, co-starters Ryan White (four carries, 24 yards) and Terrence Holt (three carries, 12 yards) played limited snaps.
Pemberton finished with 38 yards on seven carries while Patrick Haskins ended up with 30 yards on six attempts while junior Wes Kitts had six carries for eight yards.
Kicking-wise, the Govs placekickers made four of five attempts, including a pair each by returning placekicker Stephen Stansell and senior Isaac Ziolkowski.
The Govs now will make preparations for the 6 p.m, Thursday, Sept. 2, season opener against Cumberland in Governors Stadium.
