Freshman Kink named OVC Soccer Offensive Player of the Week

Austin Peay State University GovernorsFreshman Emily Kink, of the Austin Peay State University women’s soccer team, was named the Ohio Valley Conference Offensive Player of the Week, the league office announced, Tuesday.

Kink, a Franklin native, is one of five newcomers to the Lady Govs roster added with hopes of curing the team’s offensive woes from 2009. After a season where the Lady Govs scored only eight goals and lost seven one-goal games, Kink’s presence up front has been much appreciated.

“She’s making her mark within our team and we look forward to seeing her continue to improve,” Lady Govs head coach Kelley Guth said. “This is a great honor for her and we want to use this as another tool for our team to build momentum.”

In her first collegiate start at Virginia Military Academy, Kink lifted the Lady Govs after a slow first-half start.

It was scoreless at the break, but took only three minutes for Kink to find the back of the net. Kink deposited a 25-yard shot which would turn out to be the eventual game winner.

The young striker scored her second goal in the 59th minute off a feed from freshman Joceline Quiceno to make it 3-0 and become the 18th player to score two goals in a game. She added an assist in the 73rd minute for a game-high five points.

Against Lipscomb, Kink was just as dangerous. The Lady Bisons entered the match with a highly-touted offensive scheme, but Kink and the Lady Govs controlled possession for much of the game. In fact, Kink was robbed of a goal in the 70th minute when she deflected a shot off the Lady Bisons keeper just inside the box. The ball rolled within inches of the goal line before it was swept away by a ensuing defender. Kink finished with a game-high five shots, including four on goal.

Kink is the first Lady Govs player to earn an OVC weekly award since Carley Newman was Goalkeeper of the Week after making a career-high 17 saves against Southeast Missouri. The last player to be named OVC Offensive Player of the Week was former Lady Govs player Rian Barger, during the 2008 season.

She’s had an outstanding start to the season,” Guth said. “The fact that she’s garnered this kind of recognition so early in the season is an indicator of our team’s improvement.”
