Sounds Top Zephyrs on Saturday Night, 5-3

Nashville SoundsNashville, TN – The Nashville Sounds beat the New Orleans Zephyrs, 5-3, on Saturday evening in front of 8,104 fans at Greer Stadium in the fourth game of a five-game series.

Joe Koshansky extended his hitting streak to a season-high eight games on the night, as the slugger knocked a two-run homer in the second inning. Catcher Martin Maldonado also added two hits with a solo shot in the same inning.

With the win, Nashville (71-63) moved to 5.5 games behind the first place Iowa Cubs in the PCL Northern Division.

New Orleans put the first run on the board in the top of the second inning to take a 1-0 lead as Sounds starter Sam Narron allowed four consecutive two-out singles.

The Sounds quickly went ahead at 3-1 in the next frame with two homers.  Brendan Katin hit a leadoff single and scored on Koshansky’s two-run home run down the right field line. The home run was Koshansky’s team-leading 23rd home run and 72nd RBI. After Jorge Sosa struck out the next two Sounds in the inning, Maldonado crushed a solo shot off the Vanderbilt Sports Medicine sign over the left field wall for the Club’s third run, his sixth of the season.

New Orleans trimmed the lead to one run in the top of the fourth inning. After Danny Richar doubled, catcher Neil Wilson singled home the New Orleans second baseman for the first run.

Reliever Scott Strickland came into the game into the game in the sixth for the Zephyrs and gave up two runs to extend Nashville’s lead to three runs. After Mat Gamel crushed a double off the wall in right center and Koshansky being hit on a 3-0 pitch, Luis Cruz smacked a two-run double off the wall in center to plate both runners. Cruz’s double was his team-leading 29th two-bagger of the season.

Matching the team-lead in his ninth quality start and the win, Narron (9-7) gave up two runs while scattering eight hits with three strikeouts in six innings pitched. David Johnson added two scoreless innings while fanning two and walking one. Chris Smith gave up a solo homer in the ninth inning to Neil Wilson, but picked up his PCL leading 24th save.

In a spot start for New Orleans, Sosa (5-4) took the loss after allowing three runs on four hits in five innings pitched for the Zephyrs.

Sounds outfielder Adam Stern snapped a 10-game hitting streak after going 0-for-4 on the night. Stern’s streak was Nashville’s seventh double-digit hit streak and the club’s longest active on the team.

New Orleans third baseman Brian Barden extended his hitting streak to a team-leading 13 games, while right fielder Scott Cousins went hitless to snap his 11-game hit streak.

The Sounds and Zephyrs will wrap up their five-game series with tomorrow’s 6:35pm CT finale at Greer Stadium, the last home game of the regular season. Right-hander Josh Butler (4-1, 5.97) will start for Nashville against New Orleans righty Nic Ungs (1-1, 4.94).
