New E-mail Scam Lures Victims with Claim of Rejected Tax Payment

Internal Revenue Service - IRSNashville, TN – The Internal Revenue Service issued an alert today regarding a new e-mail scam that uses the name of the government’s Electronic Federal Tax Payment System (EFTPS) to lure victims.

“This scam claims you made a tax payment through EFTPS that was rejected,” said IRS spokesman Dan Boone. “Remember the IRS never sends e-mails about your taxes,” Boone said. The recipient of this new scam e-mail is directed to a website which contains malware that may infect the user’s computer.

If you receive this or any similar message claiming to be from the IRS or EFTPS, do not access links or submit any information. Forward the message immediately to IRS at phishing@irs.gov using the instructions at IRS.gov.

EFTPS is a tax payment system provided free by the U.S. Department of Treasury that allows individual or business taxpayers to pay federal taxes electronically via the Internet or by phone 24/7. Visit EFTPS to enroll.
