The Silver Rose to make a stop in Clarksville Tennessee

Pro-life symbol comes to Clarksville as part of the Running of the Rose

The Knights of Columbus Silver Rose, honoring the Blessed Virgin, will pass through Clarksville on its way to the Basilica of Our Lady of Guadalupe in Mexico City.

The Silver Rose, one of three traveling across the United States, will be at Immaculate Conception Church in Clarksville, 709 Franklin St., on Saturday September 11th. There will be a prayer service and veneration of the Silver Rose start at 2:00 pm, to honor Our Lady of Guadalupe, the Patroness of the Americas. The Silver Rose program, sponsored by the Knights of Columbus, an international fraternal order of Catholic men, also is a symbol of the Knights’ commitment to the pro-life cause, as Our Lady of Guadalupe is the patroness of the pro-life movement.

The program began in 1960 as a project of the North American Columbus Squires, the youth program of the Knights of Columbus. As it did in the beginning, the Rose travels from parish to parish where people gather for a prayer service and veneration, before passing the Rose to the next parish.

Over the years, the program has expanded. Now three Silver Roses begin the trek each year, starting in Canada. One travels through the eastern United States, another through the Central United States and the third through the western part of the country. All three arrive in Laredo, Texas, at the same time, where they are carried across the International Bridge and presented to the Knights of Columbus in Monterey, Mexico. The bouquet of Silver Roses reaches its final destination in Mexico on December 12, the Feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe.

The Silver Rose’s appearance in Clarksville is sponsored by the Knights of Columbus Council 3537 at Immaculate Conception Church.

The Journey of the Silver Rose of the East

The Silver Rose that will be visiting Clarksville is the Rose of the East, which kicked off its journey in Rochester, New York on May 1st. It has since made stops in New Jersey, Pennsylvania, West Virginia, Maryland, and Virginia. After it leaves Clarksville, the Silver Rose will be stopping in Alabama, Mississippi, Louisiana, with the last stop in the United States in Laredo, Texas, where it will cross the International Bridge to Monterrey, Mexico with the other two roses on November 21st 2010. They will arrive together at the Basilica of Our Lady of Guadalupe in Mexico City on December 12th 2010.

About the Knights of Columbus

Thanks to the efforts of Father Michael J. McGivney, assistant pastor of St. Mary’s Church in New Haven and some of his parishioners, the Connecticut state legislature on March 29, 1882, officially chartered the Knights of Columbus as a fraternal benefit society. The Order is still true to its founding principles of charity, unity and fraternity.

The Knights was formed to render financial aid to members and their families. Mutual aid and assistance are offered to sick, disabled and needy members and their families. Social and intellectual fellowship is promoted among members and their families through educational, charitable, religious, social welfare, war relief and public relief works.

The history of the Order shows how the foresight of Father Michael J. McGivney, whose cause for sainthood is being investigated by the Vatican, brought about what has become the world’s foremost Catholic fraternal benefit society. The Order has helped families obtain economic security and stability through its life insurance, annuity and long-term care programs, and has contributed time and energy worldwide to service in communities.

The Knights of Columbus has grown from several members in one council to more than 13,000 councils and 1.8 million members throughout the United States, Canada, the Philippines, Mexico, Poland, the Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico, Panama, the Bahamas, the Virgin Islands, Cuba, Guatemala, Guam and Saipan.
