The Salvation Army has officially reopened the James D. Amos Homeless Shelter on Kraft Street. The shelter was extensively reconstructed by Braun Construction Services after being inundated in the May 2010 Floods. Constructed at a cost of $500,000, the shelter initially opened in February 2009. On an average day 45 people will call it home. The Shelter has the ability to provide shelter for 66 individuals and 4 families (max of 6 people each).

The cleanup and reconstruction costs were significant: for the Shelter they totaled $423,421.34, for the Thrift Store $266,772.96. For a total of $690,194.30 while a lot of this was covered by insurance, some costs remain. This is also in addition to approximately $100,000 spent on providing direct assistance during the May 2010 flooding. The Salvation Army’s operations in Montgomery County require almost $19,000 a month. So they can use as much help as the community is able to provide.
They have need of linens, towels, quilts, fresh fruits and vegetables, and other items.
