New Scholar Chat at APSU allows faculty to discuss scholarship, creative activity

Austin Peay State UniversityAustin Peay State University has a new program for faculty members to discuss their scholarship and creative activity.

Called Scholar Chat, the new venue is held from 12:30pm-1:30pm, on the first Friday of every month (October 1st, November 5th and December 3rd) in the Morgan University Center, Room 305.

In addition to being a casual gathering for faculty members to discuss their scholarship and creative activity, the forum is a time for faculty to brainstorm ideas about how to get more students interested and participating in undergraduate research. Faculty members are welcome to bring their lunch.

The first session took place September 3rd with 13 faculty members in attendance. Those who attended represented many different departments on campus including physics, sociology, English, art, business, computer science, communications, chemistry and the library.

“The meeting of minds and sharing of ideas at events like Scholar Chat enable faculty to discuss ideas that can culminate in successful undergraduate research projects,” said Dr. John Volker, a professor in the College of Business. “These projects push the student and sponsoring faculty member to a higher level of academic participation and truly make the university experience transformational rather than just informational.”
