Harris fires final-round 72 to lead Lady Govs resurgence

Austin Peay State University GovernorsBatavia, OH — Chelsea Harris fired an even-par 72 to lead Austin Peay State University to a tourney-low 307 on the final day of the University of Cincinnati Fall Invitational, played at the Elks Run Golf Club.

Still the Lady Govs low tourney round only could elevate them just one spot from 12th to 11th  in the 16-team tournament as APSU finished the tourney at 957. The 307 represented a 17-stroke improvement on the 6,136-yard layout over Monday’s second round.

Leading the charge was Harris, who followed up her pair of 76s with the 72, the second lowest individual round of the day. It was good enough to allow the 2010 Ohio Valley Conference Player of the Year to finish in fifth place overall, ahead of any other OVC golfers who played in tournament. Host Cincinnati possessed the medalist as Bambee Dela Paz shot a 217 (75-71-71).

Harris, who owned the Lady Govs’ only sub-80 rounds prior to Tuesday, received some help during the final round. Freshman Rachel Deaton followed up a pair of 81s with a 77 (239/t42). Meanwhile, junior Ashley Averitt had a 78 (247/t57th) and senior Beth Ann Burns wrapped up her tourney with an 80 (249/t64). Senior Ashley Wathen shot an uncharacteristic 87 (256/t77).

Florida International captured the tourney with an 889, followed by Toledo (900). Fellow OVC schools Murray State (937) and Morehead State (939) finished sixth and seventh, respectively.
