Austin Peay State University GovernorsClarksville, TN – Austin Peay State University women’s tennis team saw its newcomers play well at the String ‘n Swing Memphis Collegiate, September 17th-19th, in Memphis.

The 2010 Ohio Valley Conference Tournament champions, the Lady Govs already have seen the product of success from junior Vanja Tomic (No. 123/ITA) and sophomore Carolin Weikard (No. 125/ITA). The team graduated a pair of All-OVC performers and head coach Malik Tabet has made it clear that newcomers Cassidy Hochwalt, Kimberly Loo and Rachel Margolies will be expected to hit the ground running.

Margolies did just that at the String n’ Swing Collegiate, winning Flight B3 in three straight-set matches. Her quarterfinal win came against UT Martin’s Alice Laing (6-0, 6-0). She won the draw with a (6-4, 6-4) win against Tulane’s Jessica Lange.

Loo, meanwhile, lost an opening-round match to Memphis’ Sarah Witkowski, but rebounded with two wins in the consolation bracket. In fact, she beat Lipscomb’s Samantha Bowman (6-3, 6-3) and was named the Consolation Champion. Hochwalt fell in the Flight B2 first round, but won a tiebreaker to advance to the B2 Consolation finals.

Weikard picked up her only win in Flight A2 first round against Georgia State’s Tereza Lerova. Weikard went on to fall in the third-place match to UT Martin’s Jody Tiley. Tomic and Weikard teamed up for a doubles win against UTM’s Anne Winklemann and Anna Marie Herbold in Flight A1 doubles. The pair would go on win the third-place match by default.
