APSU Men’s Tennis
Clarksville, TN – Austin Peay State University men’s tennis came away with strong results, especially in doubles, at the Louisville Invitational, September 17th-19th.
In main draw doubles action, two teams made it to the quarterfinals. Sean Bailey and Henrique Norbiato – the Govs No. 1 doubles team in the spring – picked up a win against Murray State’s Luka Milicevic and Renaldo Demoney. Two newcomers, Remi Calleja and Jasmin Ademovic won their opening match against Wright State’s Brian Dredge and Riyad Bennoui.
Strong doubles play was a weakness of the 2010 tennis Govs, primarily because of the dual-match format in which doubles counts as one decision. Despite winning five of the last six dual matches, the Govs dropped their final three doubles’ points. In fact, in Ohio Valley Conference play, the Govs were a combined 3-10 at Nos. 2 and 3 doubles, but 5-2 at No. 1.
The singles side saw the Govs go 6-5 in the 35-player main draw, with Bailey and Calleja each reaching the quarterfinals. Bailey had a straight-set win against Dredge and a three-set win against Nino. He was knocked out by eventual bracket-champion Timon Reichelt of Illinois State. Calleja, meanwhile, picked up a wins against Milicevic and Youngstown State’s Felipe Rosa.
Pagan, who lost Reichelt in the main draw’s opening round, won a pair of matches in the consolation bracket. In fact, he won each match in a second-set tiebreaker, before he was eventually beaten by consolation winner Tariq Ismail of YSU.
Sophomore Peter Conaty was one of three Govs (sophomore Drew Kerr and Storie) to play in Flight B singles. Conaty made it to the consolation finals, but lost to Murray State’s Mason Johnson.
