Govs fall in first FBS battle at Wisconsin

Austin Peay State University GovernorsMadison, WI – Austin Peay State University’s football team had few answers for nationally-ranked Wisconsin, falling 70-3 in non-conference action, Saturday afternoon, at Camp Randall Stadium.

Football Bowl Subdivision No. 10/11 Wisconsin (4-0) scored on all seven of its first-half possessions and accumulated 418 yards in the opening half, putting Austin Peay in a hole it could  not dig out of. The Badgers scored on each of their third-quarter drives before the Govs forced a punt on their first possession of the fourth-quarter.

Austin Peay’s (2-2) three points came on its second drive, an 11-play, 53-yard push that junior Stephen Stansell capped with a season-long 51-yard field goal. Junior Jake Ryan completed four of his five passes during the drive for 48 yards.

The Govs ground game, which averaged 189 yards per game entering the day, was limited to 42 yards on 32 plays in the opening half. Instead Ryan was called upon to move the Govs offense and completed 9-of-19 passes for 115 yards, completing passes to eight different receivers. The Govs finished with 157 total yards.

Wisconsin finished the game with 618 yards total offense, including 346 rushing yards. James White carried the ball 11 times for a game-high 145 yards and four touchdowns. John Clay added 118 yards and a touchdown on 15 carries.
