Austin Peay State University GovernorsClarksville, TN – Austin Peay State University women’s soccer team suffered its first home loss, Sunday, 1-0, against Southeast Missouri in Ohio Valley Conference action.

Not only was it the the Lady Govs’ first OVC loss, it also marked the first time this season the Lady Govs were shutout.

“It’s disappointing,” head coach Kelley Guth said. “I don’t think we played our best soccer today and I think if we do that, it’s a different game. We have to learn from this. Friday nights are easy to get excited and motivated for, but we can’t afford to have a drop off come Sundays.”

The Redhawks (5-4) dialed in on a combination play in the 78th minute and Ashley Runion connected on the game winner to even SEMO’s OVC record at 1-1. The game’s only goal was not as much the result of a defensive breakdown as it was a well-played attack by the Redhawks.

In a game that was played even throughout, Austin Peay was unable to break through the Redhawks defense for anything substantial. The Lady Govs outshot the Redhawks, 10-5, but the difference came in the fact that all five SEMO shots were on goal.

Austin Peay (9-3; 1-1 OVC), conversely, failed to put a shot on goal for the first time this season. The opportunities were few, even with two corner kicks in the game. Freshman Tatiana Ariza had two shots, both of which went wide, as did Joceline Quiceno and Natalia Ariza. The Lady Govs best chance came in the 89th minute when senior Monique Wong battled the keeper and placed a header just outside the post.

“We didn’t play inspired,” Guth said. “We talked before the game about coming out with energy, desire and determination, but I didn’t see that in our team today.”

Senior goalkeeper Carley Newman, who allowed her first goal since September 12th against Southeastern Louisiana, finished with four saves, Austin Peay returns to action on the road with a Friday OVC game at UT Martin, followed by a Sunday game at Murray State.
