Sherrod tops OVC field at Louisville, named Athlete of the Week

Austin Peay State University GovernorsClarksville, TN – Senior Luke Sherrod, of the Austin Peay State University men’s golf team, tallied a 15th-place finish at the Cardinal Intercollegiate, last Tuesday, and has been named the Copies in a Flash Athlete of the Week.

Luke Sherrod Against a difficult field at the Louisville tournament, Sherrod improved in position each round before closing the tournament with the Govs only under-par round. That final-round 70 allowed him to finish at one-over par for the event.

Out of the four participating Ohio Valley Conference teams, Sherrod was the top performer in the event and named the OVC Golfer of the Week.

Thus far, Sherrod has been the Govs top performer. He was one of two Govs to finish under par at the Marshall Invitational and, last week he overcame a windy day on a tough course to complete his climb.

The Copies in a Flash APSU Athlete of the Week is selected by the APSU Sports Information staff each Tuesday during the academic year. Copies in a Flash, of Clarksville, sponsors the award.

Other notable performances by Austin Peay athletes included:

  • Freshman Tatiana Ariza, of the Austin Peay women’s soccer team, scored the Lady Govs only goal in their OVC-opening win against Eastern Illinois, Friday. It was the Lady Govs first league win since 2008 and the first win against the Panthers in program history.
  • Sophomore kicker Stephen Stansell, of the Austin Peay football team, scored the Govs only points in their loss at No. 11 Wisconsin. Stansell capped an 11-play, 53-yard drive with a season-long 51-yard field.
  • Senior Jessica Mollman, a middle blocker on the Lady Govs volleyball team, finished the week with 28 kills and a team-best .350 attack percentage. She recorded a team-high 15 kills (along with sophomore Nikki Doyle) in the Lady Govs five-set loss at Jacksonville State. Mollman began the week with an eight-kill, .500-attack percentage effort against Lipscomb. She also had seven blocks during the week with three against both Tennessee Tech and JSU.
