Stansell one of 11 FCS placekickers to receive Fred Mitchell Award recognition in September

Austin Peay State University GovernorsClarksville, TN – Austin Peay State University sophomore placekicker Stephen Stansell is one of 32 kickers who received September recognition for the Fred Mitchell Award.

The annual Fred Mitchell Outstanding Place-Kicker Award (also known as the Fred Mitchell Award) is provided to the nation’s top collegiate place-kicker among more than 600 Football Championship Subdivision (FCS), Division II, III and NAIA football teams. The Award is named for Fred Mitchell, the record-setting place-kicker, Wittenberg University Athletic Hall of Famer, author, philanthropist and Chicago Tribune sports columnist.

Stansell was one of 11 FCS placekickers to be recognized along with eight Division II, 10 Division III and three from NAIA.

The recipient of the Fred Mitchell Award will be chosen based on excellence on the football field and in the community.

The Award’s Watch List is released in August, top performers are recognized monthly during the college football season, and the winner is announced in mid-December.  The school of the Award winner receives scholarship funds and the Fred Mitchell Award trophy will be presented on February 21st, 2010 at the National Football Foundation Chicago Metro Chapter Awards Ceremony at Halas Hall.

Stansell was not on the August watch list but his September performance earned him recognition. The sophomore from Athens leads the Governors in scoring with 34 points on 8-of-9 field goals and a perfect 10-of-10 on point-after touchdowns.

Stephen StansellStansell ended the month tied for seventh in the FCS in field goals made (2.0 per game) and tied for 24th in points per game. After four weeks, Stansell was first in the Ohio Valley Conference in scoring among place-kickers and second overall while leading the league in field goals made and field-goal percentage (88.9 percent).

He made a 50-yard field goal against Tennessee State, September 18th, en route to the Govs’ 26-23 win while also tying the school single-game record with four field goals. He earned OVC Specialist of the Week and College Football Performance Awards Place-Kicker Co-Performer of the Week for his efforts.

The last week, Stansell was responsible for the Govs’ only three points at Wisconsin, blasting a 51-yard second-quarter field goal. He is the only place-kicker in school history to make field goals of more than 50 yards or more in consecutive games.

In addition, Stansell is averaging 58 yards in 23 kickoffs.

Off the field, Stansell is a volunteer in the Young Life program, a non-denominational Christian ministry that reaches out to youth.
