Austin Peay State University GovernorsClarksville, TN – Austin Peay State University men’s golf team returns to action at the historic Canterbury Golf Club for the Telich Sun Life Financial/CSU Invitational, in Beachwood, Ohio.

Wright State, ranked No. 67 by Golfweek, highlights the 15-team field, along with Northern Illinois (102), the Govs (128), Oakland (129), Loyola (137) and host Cleveland State (147) round out the top-150 teams. Also in the field is Appalachian State, Cincinnati, IPFW, Malone, North Dakota State, Ohio Wesleyan, Robert Morris, St. Francis, and Youngstown State.

Canterbury is a par-71, 7,012-yard championship course that has played host to all five major golf championships; the PGA Championship, the Senior PGA Championship, the U.S. Open, the Senior U.S. Open and the U.S. Amateur. Most recently, Canterbury hosted the 2009 Senior PGA Championship.

“It will be exciting to have our players get a chance to experience such a great golf venue,” head coach Kirk Kayden said. “We’ve had a good week of practice and I am hoping it leads to better scores on the course.”

Canterbury’s front nine is loaded with par fours, while the back nine offers several opportunities for birdie before finishing with three extremely challenging holes. The final three holes begin with a 600-plus yard par-5, followed by a 215-yard par-3 and close with a heavily bunkered, slight-dogleg right par-4.

“This is going to be a tournament where you have to patient and think your way around,” Kayden said. “It’s a matter of getting the guys to all play well at the same time. That’s the key to our success.

The Govs will be led by senior Luke Sherrod, who has been the most consistent in the first two tournaments. Sherrod brings a 71.5 scoring average through six rounds and was recently named the Ohio Valley Conference Golfer of the Week.

Two freshmen, Anthony Bradley and Marco Iten, will play at No. 2 and No. 3, respectively. Considering Canterbury’s Scottish roots, Bradley, from England, and Iten, from Switzerland, should find a familiarity in the layout. Bradley leads the Govs with two rounds in the 60s and boasts a 72.33 scoring average. Iten also has played solid golf in his young career, with a 72.5 scoring average and only one round higher than 73.

Senior Brian Balthrop and freshman Trey Tarpley complete the Govs lineup. Balthrop still is looking to regain his form and confidence, while Tarpley is playing in only his second collegiate tournament and first in the team format. Tarpley shot 10-over as an individual at the Marshall Invitational, closing with a pair of 74s.
