Austin Peay State University GovernorsBeachwood, OH – Austin Peay State University men’s golf team is in striking range, landing in third place after two rounds at the Telich/Sunlife Financial played at Canterbury Golf Club.

The Govs shot a 21-over par 589 for third, eight shots behind NAIA’s Malone who fired a 13-over par 581 to hold the lead. Oakland’s 19-over par 587 has the Grizzlies in second place. Wright State is only one shot behind the Govs, in fourth (590) while host Cleveland State is in fifth (591).

Senior Luke Sherrod is one of four Govs inside the top 15, after a two-over par 144 (72-73) to put him in eighth. Sherrod’s chip-in for eagle on No. 6 was one of the highlights for a Govs team that has yet to really be in contention after 36 holes.

“We shot some legitimate rounds today,” head coach Kirk Kayden said. “The rough is deep, the greens are fast, it’s wet and cold. If you shot even par today on this golf course, you did pretty good. We start over tomorrow, though. If we can get four guys to go out and finish strong, it will be exciting.”

Credit strong rounds by sophomore Anthony Bradley and senior Brian Balthrop as well. Bradley is t-11th after a four-over par 146 (75-71) and Balthrop, who nailed a 30-foot birdie putt on his last hole to finish with a five-over par 147 (76-71), is t-14th.

The Govs got a strong opening round from freshman Marco Iten, only to see the Swiss player grind out a 78 to finish at nine-over par 151 (71-78), good enough for 28th. Freshman Trey Tarpley shot 76-82 for a 16-over par 158.

“Luke has himself in a good place with 18 holes to play,” Kayden said. “Hopefully, that second round will give Brian some confidence. We haven’t all put it together yet, but to have two 71s and a 73 in that second round was big. If we can get four guys with a 73 average, we’ll have a pretty successful team.”

Sitting in third after two rounds means the Govs will tee off on No. 1 and have to close with three of the tougher finishing holes the team will see all season. Final-round play begins with an 8:30am, Tuesday shotgun start.
