Titans visit Cowboys Stadium in late afternoon Game

Tennessee Titans (2-2) at Dallas Cowboys (1-2)
Sunday, October 10th, 2010 • 3:15pm CDT • Cowboys Stadium • Arlington, Texas

Tennessee TitansNashville, TN – After suffering a 26-20 loss at home to the Denver Broncos, the Tennessee Titans (2-2) look to rebound this week against a rested Dallas Cowboys team that is coming out of its bye week. Kickoff at Cowboys Stadium (capacity 80,000) is scheduled for 3:15pm CDT on Sunday, October 10th.

The Titans and Cowboys, who spent three and a half decades as in-state rivals when the Titans played in Houston as the Oilers, have met sparingly through the years in the regular season. In 12 games between the two clubs, the Cowboys hold a 7-5 edge, including victories in the most recent encounters in 2002 and 2006.

This week begins a six-week stretch in which the Titans play just one home game. After visiting Dallas, they travel to Jacksonville for a Monday night game on October 18th. They host the Philadelphia Eagles on October 24th, followed by a Halloween road game at San Diego, a bye week and a road trip to play the Miami Dolphins on November 14th.

The Broadcast

The game will be televised regionally on CBS, including Nashville affiliate WTVF NewsChannel 5. Jim Nantz will handle play-by-play duties, while Phil Simms will provide color commentary.

The Titans Radio Network, including Nashville flagship 104.5 The Zone, will broadcast the game across the Mid-South with the “Voice of the Titans” Mike Keith, color commentator Frank Wycheck, sideline reporter Cody Allison and gameday host Larry Stone.

The game can be heard locally on 1400 AM, WJZM.

The Titans and Cowboys heading into Week 5

Tennessee TitansThe loss last week against the Broncos masked a defensive performance by the Titans in which they recorded six sacks and only allowed 19 rushing yards—the fifth-lowest rushing total by an opponent in franchise history. However, the Titans lost the turnover battle 2-1 and allowed 341 passing yards by Broncos quarterback Kyle Orton.

Tennessee’s defense is ranked eighth overall in the NFL through four weeks, permitting 302.8 yards per game, and the unit is ranked eighth in scoring defense at 17.0 points allowed per game. With 16 sacks, the Titans are tied with the New York Giants and Green Bay Packers at the top of the league.

The Titans also rank seventh in the NFL in scoring offense. Quarterback Vince Young is off to the best start of his career through four contests, completing 66 percent of his passes (47 of 71) for four touchdowns, two interceptions and a passer rating of 94.3. His backfield mate, running back Chris Johnson, ranks sixth in the league with 354 rushing yards.

Yet another formidable challenge awaits the Titans this week. They face the league’s fifth-rated offense in the Cowboys, who are averaging 391.7 yards per contest. Plus, the Cowboys will have two weeks of preparation for their matchup with the Titans after enjoying a Week 4 bye.

Cowboys Helmet

In their most recent action, the Cowboys picked up an impressive 27-13 road win over the Houston Texans. Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo completed 23 of 30 passes for 284 yards, no interceptions and a pair of touchdowns to wide receiver Roy Williams. The Cowboys defense was equally imposing, collecting three turnovers and four sacks against a potent Texans attack.

In the first two weeks of the season, the Cowboys lost on the road to the Washington Redskins by a score of 7-13 and suffered a 20-27 home loss to the Chicago Bears.

Interconference Winning Streak

The Titans hope to continue their winning ways versus teams from the NFC. They have not lost an interconference matchup since a 13-10 defeat at Tampa Bay on October 14th, 2007. Their 10-game nonconference winning streak is a franchise record and the longest current streak of its kind in the NFL.

Most recently, the Titans beat the New York Giants 29-10 on September 26th to top their previous record of nine consecutive wins against NFC clubs from 1999 to 2001.

The Titans have been one of the NFL’s most successful teams in interconference play since the league’s realignment in 2002. With a 24-9 record (.727) during that timespan, only the New England Patriots (.875, 28-4) and Indianapolis Colts (.788, 26-7) have fared better.

Titans-Cowboys Series History

The Titans and Cowboys have met just 12 times during the regular season, with the series leaning 7-5 in favor of the Cowboys. The teams first played each other in Dallas in 1970, the first year of the NFL/AFL merger. The Cowboys were victorious with a 52-10 win on their way to their first NFC title and an appearance in Super Bowl V.

After making the move to Tennessee in 1997, the Oilers returned to the state of Texas for the first time on Thanksgiving of that year and defeated the Cowboys 27-14. In 2000, the teams met for the first time outside of Texas in Nashville on Christmas Night. With their 31-0 shutout of the Cowboys, the Titans clinched the AFC Central Division Championship, finishing the regular season with a 13-3 record for the second consecutive year. In 2002, the Cowboys hosted the Titans in their home opener and won 21-13.

The teams last met in Week 4 of the 2006 campaign (10/1), in a game at LP Field won by the Cowboys 45-14. Quarterback Vince Young recorded his first career start in the loss.

While their regular season meetings have been infrequent, the two former in-state rivals once met routinely in the preseason. They have played a total of 34 preseason contests, including match-ups in a string of 31 consecutive preseasons from 1967-97. No other team has played more preseason games against the Titans/Oilers than the Cowboys. Most recently, the Titans helped open the new Cowboys Stadium on August 21st, 2009 with a 30-10 preseason loss.
