TF Iron Rakkasan offers condolences to families of civilians

187th Infantry Regiment - Iron RakkasansFort Campbell KY, 101st Airborne DivisionGhazni Province, Afghanistan – Members of Task Force Iron Rakkasan met with village elders and the Andar District Sub-Governor Sher Khan October 8th following an incident that resulted in civilian casualties to express sympathy and offer condolences.

During the morning of September 29th, members of C Co., 3rd Battalion, 3-187th Infantry Regiment and the Afghanistan Uniformed Police were attacked by insurgents during a combat patrol near Fire Base Miri in Andar District.

The ensuing firefight, which also involved Apache attack helicopters, resulted in four civilians killed and three civilians wounded. The wounded were evacuated to nearby Forward Operating Base Ghazni for medical care and eventually taken to Bagram Airfield where they received medical care from U.S. military doctors and surgeons.

During the meeting, Lt. Col. David G. Fivecoat, Commander of 3rd Battalion, 3-187th Infantry Regiment from Delaware, OH, and Capt. Justin Quisenberry, Commander of C Co. 3rd Battalion, 3-187th Infantry Regiment, from Ortonville, MI, discussed the event with village elders and the families affected by the tragedy.

“This shura was an important opportunity for U.S. forces to offer sympathy and condolences to those who lost loved ones. It was also an opportunity to come together and address issues with District Sub-Governor Sher Khan for the first time in months,” Quisenberry said, whose Soldiers interact with the people of the village on a daily basis.

Fivecoat and Quisenberry stressed that wounded civilians would continue to receive world-class care and that every attempt was being made to avoid injury to innocent civilians during future combat operations.
