In the meantime, a Criminal Homicide warrant was secured for Dickerson. Detectives set to task to track down Dickerson.

Detectives, at that time, were unaware that the Grand Prix had broken down in Kentucky and that Dickerson had carjacked/kidnapped a man in a Chrysler Cirrus near the area where his vehicle broke down. The man was forced to drive Dickerson into Indiana. According to information received from Indiana State Police, around 8:33am, a call was received by law enforcement in Cedar Lake about erratic/reckless driving.

At approximately 8:38am, a vehicle was pulled over in reference to the reckless driving call. As the officer approached the vehicle, he noticed a man hiding under a blanket, at which time, he called for another officer to the scene. Dickerson, who had been hiding under the blanket, sat up, pulled the blanket away, and shot himself. He later died from his self-inflicted injuries.

The carjacked/kidnapped man was unharmed.
