Vehicle Struck by IED killing Two Fort Campbell Soldiers

Fort Campbell KY, 101st Airborne DivisionFort Campbell, KY – Two 101st Airborne Division Soldiers died October 10th, when their vehicle was struck by an improvised explosive device in Zhari Province, Afghanistan.

Killed were David J. Weigle of Philadelphia, PA and David A. Hess of Ruskin, FL.

David  Weigle

David  WeigleStaff Sgt. David J. Weigle, 29, of Robbinsville, NJ, was a Cavalry Scout assigned to Headquarters and Headquarters Troop, 1st Squadron, 75th Cavalry Regiment, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault). He joined the Army in March 2002 and arrived at Fort Campbell in December 2004. His awards and decorations include: Army Commendation Medal; Army Achievement Medal; Army Good Conduct Medal; National Defense Service Medal; Iraq Campaign Medal; Global War on Terrorism Service Medal; Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal; Noncommissioned Officer Professional Development; Army Service Ribbon; Overseas Service Ribbon; and Air Assault Badge.

Weigle is survived by his fiancee, Lisa Best, of Memphis, TN; his son, Tristan J. Weigle of Oakland, CA; and his father and mother, Raymond & Patricia Weigle of New Durham, NH.

David Hess

David HessSpc. David A. Hess, 25, of Ruskin, FL, was a Land Combat Electronic Missile System Repairer assigned to Company D., 526th Brigade Support Battalion, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault). He joined the Army in April 2009 and arrived at Fort Campbell in November, 2009.  His awards and decorations include: National Defense Service Medal; Global War on Terrorism Service Medal; Army Service Ribbon; and Combat Action Badge.

Hess is survived by his wife, Diane M. Hess, and son, Bryor A. Hess both of Fort Campbell; his mother, Kathryn Dowler of Petroleum, W.Va.; and father, Jeffery A. Hess of Ruskin, FL.

A memorial service will be held in Afghanistan. Fort Campbell holds a monthly Eagle Remembrance Ceremony to honor fallen Screaming Eagles. The next ceremony will be held October 13th at 4:00pm at the Family Resource Center.
