Kunar Province, Afghanistan – Coalition forces learned that Gul Nabi, a mid-level Taliban commander was killed in an engagement with the combined security forces October 17th.
The engagement took place in the Shuryak Valley near Mantanga Village on the morning of the third day of ongoing major operations in the Pech River Valley of Kunar Province.
Nabi, an Al Qaeda associate, had been responsible for several ambushes on Afghan and coalition forces convoys. He also planned and led attacks against the Afghan Parliamentary elections, conducted kidnappings of local Afghans for ransom, and facilitated the movement of Pakistani and Arab fighters into Kunar Province.
“Gul Nabi’s death has dealt a significant blow to the insurgents’ of this troubled Pech River valley, providing greater safety and security for the people who live and work in the region,” said U.S. Army Maj. Mary Constantino, Task Force Bastogne spokesperson.
Operations are ongoing.
