Gamecocks ruffle Govs for homecoming win

APSU Men’s Football

Austin Peay State University GovernorsJacksonville, AL – Number 3 Jacksonville State scored on five straight first-half possessions and never looked back as it defeated Austin Peay State University, 56-3, Saturday afternoon in Ohio Valley Conference football action played at Burgess-Snow Field.

The loss was the Govs fourth straight and dropped APSU to 2-5 overall and 1-3 in the OVC while Jacksonville State improved to 8-0 overall and 5-0 in the OVC. With No. 2 Delaware losing, the Gamecocks could move up to No. 2 in both The Sports Network/Fathead.com and FCS Coaches poll.

Austin Peay struck the first blow in the game, taking advantage of a botched onside kickoff attempt to open the game. The Govs took over at their JSU 43 and moved down to the Gamecock 33 yard line before stalling. Stephen Stansell them boomed a 50-yard field goal-his third 50 yarder this season-to give APSU a 3-0 lead.

However, it was all Jacksonville State after that. A Coty Blanchard-to-Denzel Cheeks three-yard pass gave the Gamecocks the lead and they never were headed. After netting 10 yards total offense on the first drive, the Govs could only accumulate 43 more yards the rest of the half. JSU finished the half with 362 yards and a 35-3 lead.

Alphonso Freeney scored on two TD runs in the third-a total of three for the day-to put JSU up 49-3 heading into the final period.

Austin Peay will head back to the road, 1:00pm, next Saturday, when they travel to Charleston, IL, in another OVC matchup.
