Lady Govs golf heads to Memphis for inaugural event

APSU Women’s Golf

Austin Peay State University GovernorsMemphis, TN – Austin Peay State University women’s golf team hopes to maintain the momentum it created in the final round of the Lady Govs own tournament when they head to Memphis to play in the inaugural Memphis Women’s Invitational.

Hosted by Memphis, the tourney will consist of 54 holes, 36 on Monday and 18 Tuesday, on the par-71, 6,176-yard Ridgeway Country Club course.

The Lady Govs shot a final-round 305-tying for low round of the day-in Tuesday’s final round of the F&M Bank APSU Intercollegiate to move from seventh to fourth. The 305 was 10 strokes better than their previous tourney best round in 2000.

The 16-team Memphis tourney field will be one of the toughest the Lady Govs will face this season. In addition to Mississippi State and host Memphis, Arkansas State, Belmont, Boise State, Butler, Cincinnati, Evansville, Illinois, Indiana State, IPFW, Marshall, Samford, Southern Miss and UAB all will be participating.

“The field this week in Memphis is very good and we are excited about being a part of the event,” APSU coach Sara Robson said. “We are coming off a great round on Tuesday and hope to use the confidence we gained to gain some momentum for this week.

“Ridgeway is a tight golf course with fast greens. Having just played at home and practicing on fast greens we should handle the greens well. It will be very important for us to be accurate off the tee and to hit lots of greens.”

Chelsea HarrisAPSU will take its top performers from their own tourney to Memphis-senior Chelsea Harris, who finished second individually in the F&M; senior Ashley Wathen, coming off two solid rounds as an individual; junior Ashley Averitt and freshmen Rachel Deaton and Tala Mumford-this will be Mumford’s first opportunity to play as a team member after playing individually previously. Sophomore Tabitha Beard will play as an individual in Memphis after a pair of 80s in the F&M.

“Chelsea continues to play well but is dealing with some lower back pain,” Robson said. “She is getting it under control and still continues to work toward her goal of finishing near the top in every event.

“Deaton and Averitt continue to be a consistent part of our line-up and we expect them to play well this week, hit the ball consistently and make some putts.

Ashley Wathen“Ashley Wathen is coming off a great tournament and her confidence is building on a daily basis; she needs to believe in herself and not let one shot get her down. Tala is coming off her career-low finish and is excited about making the traveling team.  She will need to focus on staying relaxed and not putting too much pressure on herself.

“Tabitha will be competing as an individual and is excited to able to compete.”

Ridgeway Country Club is the oldest club in Memphis, founded in 1861. However, the first nine holes of the golf course were not constructed until 1919. The final nine holes were not completed until 1950.

The tourney will begin each day with 8:00am, shotgun starts.
