Vandy’s June Stewart Invitational set for Lady Govs Tennis

APSU Women’s Tennis

Austin Peay State University GovernorsClarksville, TN – Austin Peay State University women’s tennis team returns to the courts for 2010 June Stewart Invitational, hosted by Vanderbilt, Friday and Saturday, at the Currey Tennis Center.

The eight-team tournament includes the Lady Govs, host Vanderbilt, Ohio Valley Conference team Murray State, regional teams from Belmont, Lipscomb and Middle Tennessee, as well as Purdue and Memphis.

Austin Peay is looking to continue its strong play from the APSU Winter Fling, where the Lady Govs hosted two of the three teams playing in the upcoming June Stewart Invite – Murray State and Lipscomb. At the Winter Fling, Austin Peay won all three singles draws, the top doubles draw and a doubles consolation draw.

The focus for the Lady Govs has been integrating the newcomers into a lineup that includes the 2010 OVC Player of the Year Vanja Tomic and the 2010 OVC Freshman of the Year Carolin Weikard. Both Tomic and Weikard lost their respective doubles partners to graduation, leaving head coach Malik Tabet in search for the right combinations.

“Vanja’s healthy and we’re going to see how much she can go,” Tabet said. “I like the way she’s been playing. She won the past tournament pretty handily. Carolin is the question mark right now as she has been working on improving some things in her game and she’s not real comfortable with it yet.”

Freshman Rachel Margolies and Kimberly Loo have improved in each tournament as well. In fact, for the Fall, Margolies is 7-1 with a 3-1 record against OVC competition. However, her only loss came against Eastern Illinois’ Janelle Prisner in three sets. Loo’s contributions have come in doubles play, where she has teamed with Weikard for a  6-0 mark Fall mark.

“I like what Rachel and Kimberly are doing,” Tabet said. “I think we’ll have a much stronger bottom of the lineup with them. I’m looking forward to see that they’re applying what we’ve been working on.”
