Patrol struck by IED device killing one Fort Campbell Soldier

Fort Campbell KY, 101st Airborne DivisionFort Campbell, KY – A 101st Airborne Division Soldier died November 8th, when his vehicle was struck by an improvised explosive device while on patrol in Khogyani District, Nagarhar Province, Afghanistan.

Specialist Anthony Vargas, 27, of Reading, PA, was an Infantryman assigned to Charlie Troop, 1st Squadron, 61st Calvary Regiment, 4th Brigade Combat Team, 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault).

Anthony VargasHe joined the Army in October 2008 and arrived at Fort Campbell in February 2009. His awards and decorations include: National Defense Service Medal; Global War on Terrorism Service Medal; Army Commendation; and Army Service Ribbon.

Vargas is survived by his wife, Luisa L. Vargas; son Nathaniel S. Vargas; son Lucas A. Vargas; and daughter Olivia Vargas all of Clarksville, Tennessee; father Julio Vargas and mother, Maria Vargas both of Reading, PA.
