Austin Peay State University GovernorsClarksville, TN – Herdie Lawrence, a 5-11 guard who helped lead Collins Hill High School (Suwanee, GA) to the 2010 Georgia Class AAAAA state tournament, has signed a letter of intent to play basketball at Austin Peay State University.

Lawrence, a combination point/two guard, averaged 14 points and five rebounds per game as a junior for coach Josh Grayson. He helped Collins Hill sport a 19-8 record and advance for a third straight season to the state tournament, where the Eagles lost to eventual state champion Milton.

“Herdie is one of the better guards I saw this summer,” APSU coach Dave Loos said. “He is a real active player—if there is action, I can promise you he is in the area. He is a combo guard who can play the one or the two–he is just guard, a good guard.

“I think they list him about 5-11. Looking at him, he looks bigger. I know one thing for sure he plays bigger. When you ask how big is he? The answer is big enough.”

It was Lawrence’s spring and summer performances for the Atlanta Elite AAU team that saw his stock elevate. During AAU competition, he averaged 21 points per game and scored 37 points against one team that was believed to be loaded with as many as eight Division I prospects.

“He had a terrific summer,” Loos said. “He just absolutely blew up in July. He shoots it well, he makes good decisions. I think he is a good team guy who is very aggressive and very athletic.”

In fact, when the September contact period opened, Lawrence was the first recruit visited by Loos.

“We are really happy to get this guy,” Loos said. “Herdie is a good sign for us. He was heavily recruited and it really picked up during the contact period.”

Lawrence is a prep teammate of Saah Nimley, who signed with Charleston Southern, Wednesday. The Govs will play Charleston Southern in the Chicago Invitational Challenge.

Lawrence also is starting wide receiver on the Eagles football team.
