Austin Peay State University GovernorsClarksville, TN – Austin Peay State University’s baseball team continued its fall signing period efforts as Ryan Quick, of Mt. Vernon, IL, and Reid Mathews, of Kingsport, signed national letters of intent, Wednesday.

Quick, a 6-0, 170-pound right-handed pitcher, is currently at Rend Lake (IL) College. He prepped at Mt. Vernon Township High School where he played shortstop and pitched. He compiled a 4.06 ERA with 22 strikeouts in 20.2 innings pitched, mostly as a reliever. At the plate, Quick batted .346 with a .467 on-base percentage added by 24 walks. He also had five triples and 12 stolen bases during his senior campaign. Quick was a three-sport prep athlete, earning conference “Most Valuable Player” honors in soccer and was a starter on the basketball team.

“Ryan is an extremely good athlete,” said Govs head coach Gary McClure. “I first saw Ryan pitching this past summer and watched him dominate hitter after hitter. He threw 88 to 90 (miles per hour) the whole time with a really good slider. I was excited about him even more when I learned that he had only been pitching for a little more than a year. We expect Ryan to come in next year and compete for a job on the back side of our bullpen.”

Mathews, a 6-0, 175-pound shortstop, will play this season at Dobyns-Bennett High School after transferring. Last season, he batted .393 with 10 doubles, five home runs and 31 RBI at Sullivan South High School. Mathews was named all-conference for the second consecutive year following last season’s campaign.

“We are extremely pleased to have Reid join our family here at Austin Peay,” said McClure. “He is an outstanding individual that is very talented on the field. Reid fits the mold of the type of player that we want to recruit here – he plays the game the right way every day. He possesses solid actions at shortstop and has plenty of arm strength to play anywhere in the infield.”
