Austin Peay State University GovernorsClarksville, TN – Trent Caffee, Austin Peay State University’s senior quarterback who suffered neck and head injuries in Saturday’s contest against Murray State, has been discharged from St. Thomas Hospital in Nashville.

“Trent has shown daily progress,” APSU head athletic trainer Joni Johnson said. “With the type of neck injury he sustained and a concussion, he has been placed in position where the road to recovery is not insurmountable. With his work ethic he should return to normal activities. It will take time.”

The senior quarterback was injured during the second quarter of Saturday’s game while attempting to scramble for a first down against Murray State. On the play, his helmet was ripped off by a would-be tackler and the helmet-less Caffee then had his head slammed into the shoulder pads of a defender before being taken to the turf where his head made contact with the artificial surface.

“The coordination of care from our on-site medical personnel—from our athletic trainer Seth Billings, Dr. (Cooper) Beazley, the Montgomery County EMS, Gateway Medical Services—will allow him to make the progress expected. They recognized the circumstances and worked quickly and efficiently to administer the proper care.”

Trent CaffeeCaffee was transferred from Gateway Medical Center to St. Thomas in Nashville, where he was under the care of Dr. Jason Hubbard, a neurosurgeon with the Howell/Allen Brain and Spine Specialists who also is member of the APSU medical team.

Caffee has returned to the Austin Peay campus and is expected to “resume his academic endeavors in the foreseeable future as his injuries continue to improve,” Johnson said.
